One World, One Love is on Facebook! Our page is the best way to find out about immediate volunteer opportunities:
One World, One Love volunteers engage in a variety of activities to welcome and support refugees resettling in New Jersey. Volunteers working directly with families are required to complete a background check. We’d love for you to join us!
Welcome Home Program
A dining room table, a couch, and one bed per person. These are the few furnishings that resettlement agencies typically provide a refugee family arriving in the United States. 1W1L and its village of generous donors step in to provide so much more, from warm bed comforters to fluffy bath towels, kitchen essentials to toys and books for the children. 1W1L volunteers not only collect and deliver these donations, but also clean and set up apartments before families arrive. Donate items from our Amazon Wish List. Volunteer to help at our next apartment set-up.
LEAP: Literacy and Enrichment Activity Program
1W1L volunteers build community through a weekly literacy and enrichment program for refugee families in Elizabeth, NJ. During the first hour, adults practice English conversation while children get help with homework or enjoy story time. LEAP concludes with an enrichment activity, such as art or music, and a shared meal. Volunteers are needed both on-site and remotely. Sign up to volunteer.
1W1L acts as a rapid-response team to meet the needs of our new neighbors. Our goal is to be wherever and however we are most needed. We have faciliated several donation drives, including: Winter Clothing: Winters in New Jersey are brutal. Volunteers “adopt” incoming families and make sure all of their winter clothing needs are met. Baby Essentials: 1W1L volunteers have welcomed several “special deliveries,” donating gently-used baby furniture, clothing and other supplies to families who are expecting. Back to School: In the fall, 1W1L provides backpacks brimming with school supplies to dozens of children. Art Supplies: When 1W1L heard about a recently-arrived refugee, an accomplished artist, who longed to resume his painting, donors sprang into action with gift cards to a local art store. A volunteer drove him to get his supplies. Join our Facebook group to learn about current drives.
Outings and Celebrations
1W1L has coordinated day trips to show families the beauty of their new country. Recent outings have included visits to the Jersey shore, a local science museum and an area farm. We also host events to celebrate holidays such as Eid and Christmas.
Through job training, language development and professional services, as well as health and wellness programs, 1W1L supports families on their journey toward achieving health, prosperity and happiness.
Support for Reunited Families
In recent months, 1W1L has assisted immigrant families who were separated at the border. These families have been reunited but are unable to work while awaiting their asylum trials. 1W1L volunteers stepped in to support them through this difficult time with friendship, donations, and other assistance.
